In season 1 of Fast Facts Nephrology we cover in detail two prominent topics in the field - hyperkalemia and chronic kidney disease associated pruritus (otherwise known as 'kidney itch'). We are joined by some of the top specialists from the world of nephrology to discuss diagnosis, management and how to achieve best outcomes for patients.

Adam Whaley-Connell

Adam Whaley-Connell DO, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and Harry S Truman VA Hospital, USA. His research interests include hypertension and kidney disease. Dr Whaley-Connell has co-authored over 300 publications.

Portrait Janani Rangaswami

Janani Rangaswami

Janani Rangaswami, MD, FACP, FCRS, FAHA is an attending nephrologist and Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences USA. She has authored over 100 publications in cardiorenal medicine and is the lead editor of two textbooks in this field: Textbook of Cardio-nephrology and the Textbook of Kidney Disease in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Dr Ranagswami has won several awards for teaching and leadership in her career and helped establish the Philadelphia Agreement on Gender Equality in Internal Medicine, which is a regional movement to ensure gender equity in Internal Medicine training involving several programs.

George Bakris

George Bakris MD, is Professor of Medicine at University Chicago Medicine and Director of the American Society of Hypertension Comprehensive Hypertension Center. He specializes in the diagnosis and reduction of high blood pressure, particularly in complicated and refractory cases. He is also skilled in the treatment of kidney disease, with special expertise in diabetes-related kidney disease and slowing its progression. Dr Bakris has served on many guidelines' committees over the past 15 years and is currently the chair of the American Diabetes Association Blood Pressure Consensus Panel and a member of the American Heart Association panel updating resistant hypertension guidelines.

Dr Hugh Rayner

Dr Hugh Rayner is a retired consultant nephrologist from the UK on the topic of chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus, also referred to as ‘Kidney Itch’. Dr Rayner is an advocate of raising awareness of kidney itch, a condition which often goes undiagnosed and when recognized, it is often inadequately treated or not treated at all. He has also written numerous publications on subject and most recently has co-authored a new free access Fast Facts book for healthcare professionals entitled ‘Kidney Itch’ as well co-developed an accompanying interactive clinician focused e-learning training program.
