For the second season of the Fast Facts Nephrology podcast, we focus on the subject of Public Health and Nephrology Worldwide. We speak with nephrology and public health experts from across the world, gaining insight and vision of issues that must be addressed and overcome to guarantee a better treatment for patients with kidney diseases in the world today.

Portrait Dr. Alejandro Ferreiro Fuentes

Dr. Alejandro Ferreiro Fuentes

Dr. Ferreiro Fuentes is a nephrologist and Professor of Medicine at the Universidad de la República in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was President of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SLANH) from 2019-2021. He is passionate about the development of nephrology in Latin America and about raising awareness of kidney disease as a growing public health problem.

Portrait Dr. Geraldo Silva Junior

Dr. Geraldo Silva Junior

Dr. Silva Junior is a nephrologist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil. He holds a PhD in Medical Sciences and Post-Doctoral fellowship in Public Health/Epidemiology at the Federal University of Bahia. He is an active member of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology and the International Society of Nephrology. Dr. Silva Junior has dedicated the past two decades to the study of tropical diseases with kidney involvement, novel biomarkers of kidney injury, and the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease. He is a tireless advocate of raising awareness of kidney disease in Latin America.

Dr. Simon Fraser

Dr. Fraser is a public health doctor with a decade of experience as a GP. His public health research aims to understand and address the determinants, burden, inequalities and adverse outcomes associated with chronic disease. Dr. Fraser spent ten years as a full time Principal in General Practice in Southampton. He completed his doctoral degree in 2014 on the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease, with a particular interest in inequalities and health literacy. He now works as a public health academic at the University of Southampton.

Dr. Rolando Claure-Del Granado

Dr. Claure-Del Granado is a nephrologist and the Head of the Division of Nephrology at the Hospital Obrero No 2 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. His postgraduate training included a residency at the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition "Salvador Zubirán" (U.N.A.M) in Mexico City, and a Research Fellowship at the University of California San Diego. He is currently an Associate Researcher at the UMSS Biomedical Research Institute (IIBISMED) and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). Dr. Claure-Del Granado is a member of the Acute Kidney Injury Committee of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertension (SLANH) and is past president of the Bolivian Society of Nephrology and Hypertension.

Dr. Polianna Albuquerque

Speaker bio Dr. Polianna Albuquerque is a Nephrologist with a special interest in toxicology. She is Coordinator of the Center for Intoxication and Toxicological Assistance at the Hospital Instituto Dr. José Frota in Fortaleza, Brazil. She has experience in Emergency Medicine, Nephrology and Clinical Toxicology, and conducts research in the area of poisoning by venomous animals.
