The year 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Ophthalmic Research and we wish to celebrate with you. To mark this occasion, we have created this special Best of collection with 10 papers from the journal, selected by the Editor in Chief, Hendrik P.N. Scholl – check out the highlights below.
Celebrating 50 Years of Ophthalmic Research
This special issue is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Ophthalmic Research, an international journal featuring original papers and reviews reporting on translational and clinical studies in the field of ophthalmology and vision research. The journal was founded in 1970 by O. Hockwin (Bonn, Germany), G. Naumann (Hamburg, Germany) and D.F. Cole (London, United Kingdom). More than 2800 papers have been published in Ophthalmic Research since then. To help celebrate the 50th anniversary of our journal, ten papers from the last two decades have been selected and included in this special issue. These papers have been selected by me as the Editor-in-Chief with selection criteria including: the number of citations, the balance of the subjects, and the contributions of the authors to ophthalmology and vision research. As expected, there were many excellent papers, many more than could be reasonably included in a special issue. The decision was most difficult and I congratulate the authors of those papers that were selected for their outstanding contribution.
This special issue is also dedicated to the journal’s former Editors-in-Chief: O. Hockwin, Bonn (1981-1994); G.F.J.M. Vrensen, Zeist (1994-2003); Uwe Pleyer, Berlin (2003-2014); David E. Pelayes, Buenos Aires, Borja Corcόstegui, Barcelona (2012-2014), and José Cunha-Vaz (2015-2018). Without their leadership and dedication, Ophthalmic Research would not enjoy the reputation it does today. This special issue offers me a wonderful opportunity to thank the journal’s associate editors, its editorial board and advisory board and the partner organizations: the European Vision Clinical Research Network (EVICR.net), the European Vision Institute (EVI), the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO), and the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS). Also, I would like to thank the team of the Editorial Office for their daily efforts for the journal and Karger Publishers for their support and dedication to ophthalmology as an eminently important subject area. Last but not least, I would like to thank all authors whose contributions have made Ophthalmic Research what it is today.
